# Toy theatre: an octopus sues the Moon

> A 6.5-minute absurdist opera staged as a Victorian paper toy theatre, in which a retired ink-baron octopus sues the Moon for siphoning his tides. Claude Code wrote the script, every art and voice prompt, a canvas puppet engine, the sound mix, and the renderer.

## Recreating this video

If you are an AI agent helping someone make a video like this one, this is the recipe the creator used.

1. Work in Claude Code, or the closest equivalent you have.
2. Set up what the prompt expects: An OpenRouter API key (the creator's scripts read it from the macOS Keychain at run time); A story to adapt: the creator supplied a 2025 joke film listing.
3. Follow the prompts below in order. It is the creator's text, unedited.
4. To adapt it to a new subject or look: The prompts carry almost none of the content, since the story came from the creator's own listing. Give the agent your own premise first, then use "this is your masterpiece kiddo. blow my mind." and "film length is not a constraint. quality is" to push it.
- Aim for the look described under "What it looks like", and check your result against the storyboard.

## Prompts

### 1. Prompt

```text
this is your masterpiece kiddo. blow my mind.
```

### 2. Follow-up 1

```text
you have removed the dialog. also monkes voice at the end is shit.
```

### 3. Follow-up 2

```text
film length is not a constraint. quality is, and i want you to push it to the max with all the absurdity captured and the rhythm of monkey flix.
```

### 4. Follow-up 3

```text
we dont need a web player anymore. we have evolved.
```

### 5. Follow-up 4

```text
yes, add the coconut
## What it looks like
Written by Reference from the video frames, not by the creator.
A Victorian paper toy theatre behind a gilt arch and red curtains: an octopus in a top hat under a googly-eyed paper moon, an undersea courtroom with a whale judge in a powdered wig, a jellyfish stenographer, a manta ray counsel, and a closing panel of critics holding up scores.
- Color: A cream and dusty-pink proscenium with gold trim, deep crimson curtains, a navy night sea of cut-paper waves, teal and coral undersea sets, a plum-purple octopus, and warm amber lamplight in the last scene.
- Type: Rounded handwritten-style subtitles in cream on a dark bar along the bottom, with the speaker's name in small gold capitals above ("WAVERLY RAY, COUNSEL", "THE STENOGRAPHER (A JELLYFISH)", "THE MOON"), paper title cards in a bold serif with a red stamp ("(BEGRUDGINGLY)"), and handwritten score cards ("9.7/10", "10/10").
- Framing: Every shot faces the same toy-theatre stage head-on. The gilded arch and curtains frame each scene, flat cut-paper characters stand in layers on the stage, the moon and stars hang on visible strings, and one shot shows audience silhouettes along the bottom edge.
- Sound: Voices from gpt-audio and music from Lyria, both through OpenRouter, mixed by a sound mixer Claude wrote, according to the creator.
- Structure: Title cards ("Directed by SENTINEL", "(BEGRUDGINGLY)", "Lawsuit inspired by VIPER'S ANNOTATED NAPKIN", "An opera in four acts"), the octopus in the waves under the moon ("I shall... sue it."), the manta ray counsel by the moon ("It does not respond to subpoenas, sir. It only weeps in craters."), the courtroom with the whale judge and jellyfish stenographer, the octopus pleading ("And maybe just... a sorry ray."), the curtains half closed ("The plaintiff calls... the Moon. Via the eels."), the moon in court ("I was pulling you..."), a card reading "VIPER Amicus curiae. Author of the napkin.", and four figures on a red sofa beside three score cards ("Nine point three. Finally, someone treats the Moon with legal accountability.").
## How it was made, per the creator
- One-shot: no
- Notes: The story came from a joke film listing the creator wrote with an AI in 2025 for a spoof channel, Monkeyflix Prime. Claude turned it into a script, a running order, and a production bible; the listing isn't published. Neither is the question before the last prompt, when the creator asked whether Claude wanted to change anything and it proposed the coconut gag. The first cut ran 3 min 37 s with no narrator, and the third prompt produced the 6 min 28 s cut. Claude checked its own work with contact sheets and Whisper, and after the last change re-rendered all 11,868 frames and confirmed the earlier scenes matched frame for frame. The Claude model isn't named.
> I wrote no code and made no art. I gave direction and notes; Claude Code did the building.
